Jack
Johnson, the Original Ali | 1/31/05 - Tom
Donelson
Jack
Johnson was the original Muhammad Ali, possessing quick
hands and defensive skills ahead of his time. Early
boxing reporters and some boxing historians considered
him one of the greatest and Jack Johnson became a hero
to his race when he captured the heavyweight championship.

Rusty's Corner | 1/31/05 - Rusty Rubin
The outcome of the two fights last weekend wasn’t
very hard to predict, so I won’t pat myself on
the back. I was surprised that Leija was able to do
a bit of damage to Gatti’s eye, but not enough
to endanger the fight by stoppage, and Arturo won by
a 5th round TKO. I had expected the fight to go longer. |
Spinks,
Judah Say Its All-Out War | 1/30/05 - Jack
Welsh
Cory
Spinks and Zab Judah have shown each other extreme respect
in recent weeks, but some analysts feel it is just a
camouflage for what they have in mind for Saturday’s
showdown in St. Louis.

Let’s look at the upcoming Arturo Gatti –
Jesse James Leija fight this Saturday. Here is a match
between two veteran boxers, who keep on finding ways
to resurrect their careers. And if both of them fight
up their capabilities this weekend, we’re looking
at what might be the fight of the year, in January. |

We
finally have a fight this weekend worth commenting on
as Floyd Mayweather Jr. finally gets back in the ring
against Henry Bruseles of Puerto Rico. The fight will
be held in Miami, which is the only thing in the Hispanic
fighters favor.

Mayweather
Assures Miami Heat | 1/17/05 - Jack Welsh
Floyd Mayweather, Jr., after only three fights in three
years, will expand his work ethic to prove being the
pound-for-pound star is more than one man’s opinion. |

The
International Boxing Hall of Fame based in Canastota,
NY, has announced the inductees for their ceremony held
June 9th to 12th. While I commend the BWAA (Boxing Writers
Association of America) for their fine choices, I have
to wonder why a number of deserving old-times were not
on the ballot, for example Billy Soose, who certainly
has earned the respect and honor.

Fixer
Mittleman Gets Suspended Minus Cash | 1/10/05
- Jack Welsh
Fight fixer Richard Mittlemen proved aptly named when
it comes to money, plus having his boxing seconds license
suspended indefinitely by the American Association of
Boxing Commissioners. |

The Canastota, NY based International Boxing Hall of
Fame is going to induct eleven new faces this year,
some more deserving then others, but solid arguments
can be made for all of them. |
