Castillo,
Lacy Mandalay Choices | 2/28/05
- Jack Welsh
Jose Luis Castillo and Jeff Lacy are world champs
in different weight classes, but what they will
have in common Saturday at Mandalay Bay is the
kind of kayo power that triggers sellouts.

A lot of people thought I was crazy, picking
Miguel Cotto to be the first boxer to stop “Chop
Chop” Corley, midway. He scored the TKO
towards the end of round five. |

I don’t know how many fight fans are hockey
fans as well, but along with boxing and football,
hockey is one of my three favorite sports. I guess
I enjoy watching football because I played a bit,
and enjoy seeing a well-executed play, both offensively
and defensively, similar to boxing. If you know
the game, you know what to look for. |
Hopkins
May Go For Another "20"
| 2/22/05 - Jack Welsh
Bernard Hopkins, boxing’s ultimate innovator,
didn’t waste much time showing Howard Eastman
a full package, smashing his way into history
at 40, as an undisputed world middleweight champion
with 20 title defenses Saturday in Los Angeles.

First, let me renew my call for the powers that
be in the world of boxing to continue steroid
testing, a minimum of 1 year suspension if caught
using, as well as use the asterisk if the fighter
is ever inducted into the Hall of Fame. We must
crack down now, and set a good example not only
for our sport but others as well!*** |
Philly
Sends Hopkins West For 20 | 2/17/05
- Jack Welsh
We’re not certain who documented the axiom,
“Life Begins At 40”, but it wouldn’t
be a major surprise if the recipient was a traveling
Philadelphian named Bernard Hopkins.

The Boxing Writers Association of America, of
which I am a proud member, has announced the rest
of the awards to be given at their annual dinner,
this time held at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas on
May 6th. |

April 19, is the fight date set for El Paso,
Texas for what figures to be a war between WBO
champ Joan Guzman and WBC champion Oscar Larrios
and both titles will be on the line. |
Winky
Not Blinky About $4 Million | 2/10/05
- Jack Welsh
Ronald “Winky” Wright may not be
such an astute handle for a business man, but
like being the super welterweight champion, when
it comes to high finance he is second to none.

Judah
Speed, Power TKO's Spinks | 2/09/05
- Jack Welsh
Zab Judah, rarely short on bold predictions,
made this one stick as he parlayed superior power,
speed and strategy to become undisputed world
welterweight champion when he TKO’d Cory
Spinks in the ninth round Saturday in the latter’s
home town of St. Louis.

Spinks,
Judah Say Its All-Out War | 2/08/05
- Jack Welsh
Cory Spinks and Zab Judah have shown each other
extreme respect in recent weeks, but some analysts
feel it is just a camouflage for what they have
in mind for Saturday’s showdown in St. Louis.

The two fights in St. Louis this weekend didn’t
shock me. Monte Barrett has the potential of being
a top fighter, just never seems interested enough
to get it all together, as he did against Owen
Beck, stopping him in round five.
