Ricky Hatton won a very close decision over Luis Collazo, but off that performance,
I can tell you that he's far from ready to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. He's at least
another year away. Collazo fought like a true champion and few would have argued if they scored the fight a draw. |

As we're coming up on Memorial Day some erstwhile
journalist will open his or her efforts with "Tis the
time of baseball, apple pie and Chevrolet." Not I. I
am much too sophisticated for such actions. Showtime
has hit a home run with there first of the month
televised boxing show next Saturday. "Live (excepts
probably on the west coast) from the Thomas & Mack
Center in Las Vegas it's Diego Corrales (40-3)-Jose
Luis Castillo (54-7-1) for the WBC Lightweight title
for the third time. |

Broussard defends his belt against an angry Gibbins
5/20/06 - Dan McDonald
Lafayette's "Bad" Chad Broussard will defend his International Boxing Union world welterweight belt in
his home town, and Homer Gibbins isn't happy about that.
Gibbins lost a close but unanimous decision to Broussard back on Feb. 4 at Blackham Coliseum in a bout to
fill the IBU's vacant welterweight title, and the two will meet again as the featured event on a June 17
professional card at Blackham. |

Boxing Guru delivers a heartfelt message, in a knockout of a book!
Prior to last week's ESPN Tuesday Night Fights, at the Foxwoods Resort & Casino in Conn.,
highly respected and revered trainer-turned-commentator Teddy Atlas captivated the pre fight crowd,
on hand to get a signed copy of "Atlas: From the Streets to the Ring-A Son's Struggle to become a
Man", an autobiography, along with Peter Alson, which proved to be as riveting and interesting
as the man himself. |

Rivera and Mayorga, both got what they deserved.
5/10/06 - Mike Indri
"El Gallo" earns his world title, while "El Pollo" took a beating!
If this past Saturday night proved anything to the millions of boxing fans, especially those that tuned into
Showtime's Jose Rivera vs. Alejandro Garcia battle or paid to see Oscar De La Hoya pummel Ricardo Mayorga
on HBO's Pay-Per-View, it's that sometimes justice does get served. To Jose Rivera, a Worcester, Ma. Court
officer and the new WBA Super Welterweight World Champion, justice has prevailed, and it is sweet! |

Oscar de la Hoya got six rounds worth of work against stationary target Ricardo Mayorga.
I'm not sure if Oscar shouldn't have paced himself more and got in the extra work he'll
need in order to fight on, but it was still an impressive (although predictable win). |

Major changes in Ybor Boxing Card
5/03/06 - Rob Russen
NBA World Heavyweight Champ Sherman Williams Returns to Headline Cinco de Mayo in Ybor City.
Boxing fans rarely get a chance to see what goes on inside a
pro boxing promotion with all it's ups and downs and last minute changes that are a constant
source of concern for promoters. The last thing in the world that a promoter wants to do
is make changes on his scheduled card ... especially in the top matches. But we live in
an imperfect world and changes are inevitable. |

Not a hard weekend to pick fights, as Sam Peter was an easy, early KO winner of Julius Long.
Although I was a bit surprised by how hard it was for Acelino Frietas to take out Zaheer Raheem.
More to the point here, is that he couldn't even knock him down, but still managed to eke out
a close split decision. |

Acelino Freitas - a world champion once again!
5/01/06 - Mike Indri
"Popo" wins ugly on HBO "Boxing After Dark" at Foxwoods.
At the fight's opening bell it was obvious that Acelino "Popo"
Freitas had something to prove, to himself, and to his fans. |
