In Rusty’s
Corner
By Rusty Rubin, managing editor, Ringsports.com
This weekend, we can watch a very interesting heavyweight
fight which may have an impact in the heavyweight division..
The fight takes place in the Buffalo, NY, home of the 2-1
favorite, Baby Joe Mesi. His opponent is an old friend of mine
from the amateur ranks, DaVarryl Williamson.
The knock on Mesi has been he has been ‘protected’ and
has not fought a credible foe. It’s a legitimate one,
and this match is a step up in class.
Williamson, out of Denver, Co. is a small heavyweight but
a solid puncher, although a late starter in the pro ranks.
He is coming off shoulder surgery, and the resulting layoff.
This is not an easy fight to figure. Since both guys are big
hitters, and we have to realize that Williamson is not going
to allow this fight go to a hometown decision. And that may
leave him open to a big KO punch by Mesi.
So how do we pick this fight? Simple. Bet the under. Neither
wants this bout to go the distance.

Boxing Feedback:
Glove2Glove:
Please say a prayer for the return to health
of boxing promoter Moe Smith, who had a four by-pass surgery
on Thursday. Moe
has done much for our sport. Cards can be sent to Moe at: 2713
E. 1st St., Post Falls, ID. 82854. By the way I spoke to Moe
late last week and he’s home and doing great. Can’t
keep a good man down.
Please say prayers for former top-notch fighter Art Soto,
who is having some severe health problems from Alzheimers and
cancer.
Chas. Shandor, father in law of Ringsports.com writer Nick
Constantine has been diagnosed with cancer and needs your prayers.
Your prayers have worked and Martin Sommers is no longer in
hospice care, and in fact, is at home recovering. He and his
family pass along their heartfelt thanks, and ask that your
prayers continue.
Also down but not out with cancer is Kathy Cerola, sister
of top referee Elmo Adolph, and my best friend and co-founder
of Glove2Glove, Susiey Walker.
Needless to say we need prayers for the return to health of
both former champs Greg Page and Gerald McClellan, both confined
to wheelchairs.
Glove2Glove is a non-denominational group
set up to aide those boxing folks and their relatives in
need of prayers and cards.

Touching on politics briefly:
It may be that our President and his advisors
miscalculated the dangers of what has come to be called “Cowboy Diplomacy”.
At first, when the question was asked is the
world a safer place now then it was before Sadaam fell, the
answer would
have been a loud yes. Most people (myself included) agreed
that Hussein & Co. had to go. But no one told us or expected
us to be locked into a long term police action, that we do
not have the resources for. Yet, we cannot abandon our troops
or the majority of the Iraqi’s who are indeed our allies
and welcome freedom.
And while he is no longer in power, Hussein is/was a cold
blooded killer, and certainly many people in Iraq and the rest
of the world breathed a collective sigh of relief.
But we can’t breath easier now that
our troops are mired in Iraq and now other enemies of freedom,
and more dangerous
ones then Sadaam, can take liberties because, simply put, we
are stretched too thin.
Were we lied to about Iraq? Hard to say, but
we certainly weren’t given all the necessary information so a correct
decision could be reached. Perhaps our President was not given
the info as well. So the fault may well lie with Bush’s
ill-advised advisors.
If Iran or North Korea or any rogue Country
decides to build nuclear weapons now, do we have the ground
forces to stop them?
I doubt it, so what’s left but an air attack, possibly
nuclear.
Cowboy diplomacy may have worked well on Bonanza
and other TV westerns, before the nuclear age, but sadly,
it obviously
isn’t working now.
Our President has picked a team of advisors
who knew how to get him into trouble in Iraq, but have no
clue how to get him
out of it. Right now we must protect our troops, so we’re
stuck there.
I’m not questioning the President’s
honesty, but rather his trust in some of his advisors, including
his Vice
President who has ties to Haliburton, an oil company that he
used to be CEO of, and who gets more then their share of Iraqi
contracts.
And then President Bush goes before the UN,
and asks for help, but tells them essentially that if they
choose not to assist
us, we’ll go it alone. More cowboy diplomacy that can
leave us high and dry. Who the hell is advising him, and why
is he listening? In fact, why are they still part of his team?
They can only bring him down.
Those are the questions that had better be
answered to the satisfaction of the American people, or “W” will
be a one term President.***
And briefly, how do we screen to personnel and allow two pro
terrorist security guards to watch the terrorist prisoners
we harbor at the Guantanamo Bay Navel Base?
If they have infiltrated our military, and
this is not the first sign that has happened, how secure
can any Americans
be? Is something to think about when we go to sleep at night?
Or go shopping during the day? It’s like the days of
Joe McCarthy, where everyone around us is a communist. Quick,
close the door, they’re coming in the window! The sad
thing is, this time they truly may be all around us, waiting.
While we’re weakening our national defenses by spending
much needed money on Iraq’s.
Simply put my friends, we are in a mess!
But don’t panic folks, that’s exactly what the
terrorists want. Keep in mind that it’s not quite as
bad as it first sounds. We must realize that the vast majority
of Muslims believe in the true teaching of the Koran, which
is not the new perverted version, and if push comes to shove,
they will be there, fighting by our side.***
Finally, to the judge who thinks the rights
or telemarketers are more important then the rights of the
average American,
I can only wish him a month of non-stop thank you messages
from every telemarketer in the Country. Maybe then he’ll
understand what we go through.
Political feedback:
Again most welcome and will be posted as they arrive.
