In Rusty's Corner

By Rusty Rubin, editor-in-chief of the Ringsports.com publication and website advisor is the author of "Off the Canvas", #22873, a view of American history and the social problems of the times, as seen by an 80-year old ex-champion. "Off the Canvas" takes you from the time of the Great Depression till the World Trade Center disaster and is a book that has been getting rave reviews. Copies are $15.00 each available at authorhouse.com, (22873) Ringsports.com and on-line major book retailers.

"Billy Soose, the Champion Time Forgot" #31809co-authored by Tom Donelson, is also available. Soose was the middleweight champion of the world, beating greats like Tony Zale and Ken Overlin in less than a month's time. Since Tom and I live in different parts of the USA, it would be hard to co-ordinate a joint signing, both Tom or I will be available. The book is available at Authorhouse.com (book id #31809) and other fine on-line outlets. Sales have been strong.

My newest book, "Woozel, Boxing and Me", #31810 (now ready to purchase) is a compilation of funny and true boxing stories, oddities and quotes, will be out within the next few weeks. "Woozel, Boxing and Me" is a final tribute to my best friend of more than 25 years, who attended many boxing events with me. She passed away from colon cancer in Feb. 2004. The early demand for this true, and in my not-so-humble opinion, one of the funniest boxing books ever written, has been strong. For advance ordering or to purchase an autographed copy, please advise me ASAP.

Being a journalist, I’ve found that the highest tribute that one can receive is positive comments about his chosen field of work. I thank everyone who has made those comments to me, either in person or other means of communication. Thank you.

Kermit Cintron decided to take the decision out of the hands of the Florida judges, and knocked out Mark Suarez in the fifth round. Probably a very smart move.***

This week there are three important fights to pick from. First In Phoenix on Saturday, Sergey Liakhovich takes on Shannon Briggs. Briggs can hit, but I still question his chin. He has been protected in his comeback and I’m not convinced he’s for real. We’ll find out here, Liakhovich by knockout.

On Saturday Robert “the Ghost” Guerrero takes on Orlando Salido for the IBF featherweight title. If the Ghost is for real, we’ll find out this night. Being just after Halloween, Guerrero by decision.

And finally, Roger Mayweather and Carlos Baldomir get it on in a fight that should be easy to predict. The question, can Mayweather, at a heavier weight hit and run for 12 rounds against the slow footed, fast handed challenger. If you like Mayweather, you can get a better price betting on the decision, as Baldomir has a solid chin.

If Baldomir catches Mayweather early and slows him down, the tempo of the fight changes. If it does, sooner or later, Baldomir will catch him and end it.

We should be able to visualize this fight easily, but the outcome of the bout is the bigger problem. Mayweather is looking ahead to Oscar next year, and looking ahead is not a good place for a fighter to be concentrating on.

Baldomir by TKO midway.

Finally, if you can find it in your heart to help keep the world famous Kronk Gym open, please e-mail me and I’ll give you the address where to send your donations.***

Agree or disagree, (not about my age) I’d like to hear from you.

Touching on politics briefly: I voted yesterday, and as usual I cast a mixed ballot. I don’t vote for parties, I vote for the man or woman who I feel best represents my views.

First, I want you to know that I resented the ballot being printed in Spanish and English. If you’re an American citizen you should be able to read English. That is a requirement for becoming a citizen. And if you can’t read English, don’t bother voting because it should be illegal for a non-citizen to vote in an election.

I have no clue why so many political candidates spend their time toeing the party line. This goes for both parties. Although in the upcoming election, many Republicans are breaking away from Bush. Few if any politicians are going to support a war that we blundered into.

I find it interesting for the President to ask the Democrats what they would do to solve the problem. We know they have no answers either, but we also are aware that it was the mistake of our intelligence and ultimately our President that led us into a country that was no immediate threat to us.

To most, the upcoming mid-term elections will be a referendum on our foreign policy, in particularly Iraq. To me, it’s not that simple. Truth is that if there was a simple way out of Iraq someone would have thought about it, and done it by now.

So I had to learn where the candidates stood on the issues that mattered most to me, and upon checking, I found that there was little difference in the candidates, so I picked a few issues, like stem cell research and immigration where I felt I could make a difference with my vote.

I hope I did and that those candidates keep their word when (and if) they are inaugurated.

Support our troops.

Have a great week.

Agree, disagree or just want to help? I’d love to hear from you.
